Mayor Bing receives award for City Library
Mayor Evelio Leonardia, together with City Librarian Merlyn Corpus received the Outstanding Library award for the Bacolod City Library in ceremonies held at TNL Auditorium in Manila.
The Bacolod City Library ranked number one in Western Visayas and was chosen as one of the top six outstanding libraries in the country, joining the ranks of libraries from Davao City (Davao), Dagupan City (Pangasinan), Angeles City (Pampanga), Zamboanga City (Zamboanga), and Talisay City (Negros Occidental).
The award is given to city libraries with excellent programs, services, and facilities that enhance interest for learning.
Leonardia said that the award given to the city library is a manifestation of the city government’s support to various activities that promote education and learning. He also expressed gratitude to the city employees who worked tirelessly for the improvement of the library and to the private and civic groups who donated books and other learning materials.
The awarding ceremonies will highlight the opening of the month-long celebration of the Library and Information Services Month spearheaded by the National Committee on Library and Information Services of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, in cooperation with the National Library of the Philippines and the Philippine Librarian Association, Inc.
Bacolod City was also recently cited as the Top Regional Performer for its Public Employment Services Office and is a finalist for the national award. The city is also vying for the regional 2009 Search for Excellence in Local Governance awards.
The city, since 2004, has been a recipient of various regional and national awards. These awards include the Top 3 Best City Disaster Coordinating Council, the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) award, Most Business Friendly City, Most Child Friendly City, Most Disabled Friendly City, Most Competitive Mid-size City, and Best Public Sector award among others.
