Mayor Jerry Treñas’s announcement yesterday that he will run for congressman of Iloilo City in next year’s election shocked everybody including former Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez Sr. A source told Bull’s Eye that the elder Gonzalez thought Mayor Jerry would announce that he will drop his political plans and go back to law practice as he has chosen to make the announcement at his law office. With his declaration to run for congressman he has already left the Gonzalez camp. The reaction of the Gonzalezes will be known today through a press conference that they have called. For sure it’s gonna be exciting.

Mayor Jerry did not give any hint as to what group he will be joining—the group of Usec. Larry Jamora or that of Jed Mabilog. Earlier reports however said that Mayor Jerry will not join Mabilog’s group, in other words there is one choice left and that is Usec. Larry Jamora. Or, it could also be that Mayor Jerry will create his own group probably without a mayoralty candidate but with a vice mayor and city councilors. By the way the prominent political figures seen in yesterday’s announcement of Mayor Jerry are: former Vice Mayor Guiling Dela Llana, City Councilor Joe Espinosa III, Brgy. Capt. Bobby Divinagracia, businessman Edward Yee, and former Liga ng mga Barangay Iloilo City Chapter president Marietta Orleans.
Called off
Vice Mayor Jed Mabilog was supposed to announce the complete slate of their group yesterday noon. But for unknown reasons the scheduled announcement was called off and was reset to next week. Probably the deferment was a result of Mayor Jerry’s declaration to run for congressman. It was learned that Vice Mayor Jed has wooed fiery City Councilor Perla Zulueta to be their congressional candidate. But sources say Councilor Zulueta will only run for congresswoman if Mayor Jerry will not run for the position. Since Mayor Jerry will run for congressman, will Councilor Zulueta heed Mabilog’s call? We’ll see next week.
