‘The Battle’ at Robinsons
The Battle was won. That is, for the final leg of the Robinsons Dance Showdown for 2009 recently. This year’s battle was the most exciting in its history, according to Jun Cortel of JPC Productions, producer of the Robinsons Dance Showdown, already on its ninth year. It was exciting for the judges and the contestants as well because after repeated deliberations, two winners were announced. The winners were the Clean Cuts Dancers of Jaro District, choreographed by Junnil de Asis and Ground Zero, choreographed by Romel Flogen.
Two selections were done. The first phase was the Wildcard Selection where the Clean Cuts Dancers won. Then, they competed against six other groups in the Grand Finals. The two winning groups got the same score from the judges, they were required to slug it out again on the stage. Then, the Clean Cuts Dancers surprised everybody with a new set of costumes and better dance steps. Then, the judges came out with the same score for both, eliciting a wild reaction from the audience.
The judges were this writer, Fritz Dapilo choreographer of Tribal Quest and GMA 6 Dancers and Kim Evan Batacando, dancer and choreographer. The criteria for judging were choreography, mastery and difficulty of steps and over-all impact.
The other groups were excellent as well. But as they say, there could only be one. In this case, two. Congratulations to everybody for a groove well done.
