Around 1,700 Day Care workers in the province of Iloilo gathered at Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center yesterday for the 19th Annual Convention of Day Care Workers.
Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) chief Dr. Neneth Pador said the yearly affair was conducted under the theme “Day Care workers’ role in child protection”.
Iloilo Governor Niel Tupas Sr. and his son Barotac Viejo Mayor Raul Tupas, president of the League of Municipalities in the Philippines-Iloilo Chapter, gave messages which lauded the Day Care workers for their dedication in their work.
Gov. Tupas assured that he will always be supportive of the Day Care workers who have a very important role in the education of young children.
Keynote speaker of the whole day affair was Marjorie de Veyra, City Administrator of Makati and concurrent head of the city’s Social Welfare Department.
De Veyra shared to the convention participants the Day Care programs of the City of Makati which can be considered a model in the whole country.
De Veyra said Day Care centers in Makati are fully air-conditioned and equipped with modern educational materials that could equal private pre-school institutions.
She added that Day Care workers are under the plantilla of the city government which is why they are receiving good salaries and benefits.
It was learned that Day Care workers in the province are only receiving allowances depending on the capacity of the local government units.
De Veyra said what they have done in Makati concerning Day Care workers could also be replicated in the province of Iloilo as long as the local government officials has the will to do it.
She cited that the City of Makati is giving importance to Day Care workers since the promotion of education, especially among children, is one of the priorities of City Mayor Jejomar Binay.
