9 Ilonggo math wizards to represent RP in int’l math tilt
Nine students from Iloilo City are among the country’s representative in Philippine International Mathematics Competition 2009 here. The students are all achievers in different international mathematics competition.
The international competition starts tomorrow (Saturday) and ends on December 2. Some 1,000 students from Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Australia and Africa will participate. There are more than 32 countries which manifested their intention to join in the competition.
The international competition will be in two levels, the Asia Inter-Cities Teenagers Mathematics Olympiad (AITMO) and Philippine Elementary Mathematics Olympiad Competitions (PEMIC). The Philippines will have 20 teams to the competition; 10 teams for AITMO and 10 teams for the PEMIC.
Participants from Iloilo include RJ Lawrence Tiu and Hubert Hao for the AITMO while Bianca Patrice Syching, Paulo Adrian Tanena, Niel Phillip Poral, Josh Thomas Clement, Miguel Lorenzo Ildesa, Ramon Galvan and Leo Emmanuel Som will compete for the PEMIC.
They were also part of the team which competed in the 8th China Primary Mathematical Olympiad held in Tianjin, China and 5th International Math Competition in Singapore.
The AITMO will be held at the Grand Hotel while the PEMIC at Punta Villa Resort in Punta Villa, Arevalo. The reading of the contest rules will be made to the contestants, coaches and parents before the final day of the competition. The contestants are not all coming from English-speaking countries.
City Mayor Jerry Treñas said the holding of the international mathematics competition here will give emphasis on the value of math in the city’s vision to become a premier city in 2015.
Treñas said the same contest will not only benefit the international participants but will also create awareness among the Ilonggo students on the importance of the subject in their daily lives. It will further enhance the mathematical ability of the students. The city has been pushing for students to excel in subjects such as Math, Science and English, said Treñas.
The city government is grateful that the organizing board of the PIMC 2009 decided to hold the international math competition in Iloilo City. Iloilo City was the favored venue not only of the organizers but the parents of the participants, said Treñas.
