Iloilo celebrates 10th NGO-PO Week
The Iloilo Coalition of Non-government Organizations and People’s Organizations (ICON) will spearhead the 10th NGO-PO Week in Iloilo on December 1-7, 2009 under the theme, “Palibot Amligan; Maayong Panghimanwa Dampigan.”
The week-long celebration will kick off with a motorcade around the city on December 1, 9:00 a.m. to converge at the New Provincial Capitol building for the Opening Program. On December 2-3, ICON will conduct District Consultations to culminate with a Capability Building Seminar both for member organizations and other organizations that want to join the network on December 4 at the 5th floor Conference Room of New Provincial Capitol.
The whole day of December 5, being a Volunteerism Day, will be spent at the Capitol for Forum on Environment Concerns and Volunteerism, blood letting, rummage sale and fellowship of volunteer organizations. On December 6, a medical mission will be conducted still at the Provincial Capitol after the Ecumenical Worship Service. Highlighting the event is the Establishment of Inter-District Network and Christmas Party on December 7 wherein recognition will be given to people who have contributed to the institutionalization of the celebration.
It will be recalled that the first celebration at Central Philippine University in 2000 was spearheaded by the Iloilo Council of Social Development, Inc. network of welfare and development NGOs and supported by other members of civil society organizations. Eventually, the Iloilo Coalition of NGOs and POs (ICON) was formally organized to spearhead the annual celebration. Starting as a loose organization of NGOs and POs accredited by the city and provincial government, ICON has become a rallying point of other NGOs, POs and sectoral members of the civil society organizations in Iloilo. It is committed to serve as center of Information-dissemination, Coordination, Organizational development, and Networking to unify the NGOs and POs in the city and province of Iloilo. Membership is open to NGOs, POs, sectoral groups, civic organizations and other members of the civil society organizations in the city and province of Iloilo.
