DSWD chief leads turn over of 100 houses for typhoon victims
Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Teresita Cabral and the officials of the Habitat for Humanity (HFH) Philippines will turn over today 100 row housing units for the typhoon victims at San Isidro, Jaro relocation site.
DSWD Director III Joel Galicia said Cabral along with the officials of the Habitat for Humanity and Mayor Jerry Treñas will award the housing units to the beneficiaries.
It was not immediately known on whether Representative Raul Gonzalez Jr. will also attend the ceremony. Gonzalez also made his share in developing the relocation site. He provided funds from his countryside development fund for the water and road network.
The beneficiaries are typhoon victims whose houses were destroyed when Typhoon Frank hit Iloilo. Most of the recipients used to occupy the danger zone, either in the river banks or waterways particularly in the district of Jaro. The district of Jaro has the most number of affected families during typhoon Frank.
They were put in the priority list of beneficiaries in the housing project initiated by the government or non-government organizations. After the typhoon, they were immediately transferred to the 16.3 hectares San Isidro relocation site. Some stayed at the transit housing units while waiting for the free housing units.
The beneficiaries were identified by social workers and were properly evaluated by the joint team of the social welfare department and city government.
Galicia said the 100 row housing units are only part of the 500 core shelter units pledged by the social welfare department and the Habitat for Humanity for Iloilo City.
He added the construction of additional housing units is still on going. Each housing unit cost P70,000. The first 100 units are ready for occupancy. It will provide decent housing for the beneficiaries.
Meanwhile, Cabral will also lead the turn-over of 44 housing units, also for typhoon victims in Barangay Gaub, Cabatuan. Each unit cost P50,000.
