CENRO distributes 7T seedlings for tree planting
BACOLOD CITY – The Community Environment and Natural Resource Office (CENRO) here have distributed close to 7,000 seedlings this year CENR Officer Engr. Joan Nathaniel Gerangaya said.
Despite the absence of a budget for tree propagation, he said, they were able to provide the people with 6,803 seedlings because it is part of their service.
He said the employees volunteer their time in bagging seeds as generous donors give plastics for planting, he told PIA.
Among the species they have distributed are Baluk-Baluk, Molave, Langka, Marang
and foreign species like Gemilina, Eucalyptus, Acacia Mangium and Mahogany.
Organizations that usually request for seedlings in their office include schools, barangays, government and private organizations.
He said any person or organization can request seedlings for tree planting in CENRO “but we ask for their commitment to grow them, not just plant them” adding that the office has a standing commitment to provide seedlings to the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP).
The best time to request for seedlings and carry out a tree planting project is during the onset of rainy season from May to June until October. Beyond that, seedlings planted tend to have a lesser survival rate, he said.
Gerangaya stressed the importance of planting trees for our survival as we face climate change and global warming with its leaves absorbing greenhouse gases that are responsible for the rise of temperature of the Earth.
Ideally, at least 1/3 of a land area should be devoted to trees as he lamented the fact that we do not have enough trees, at the moment, to arrest greenhouse gases.
He reported that the nine hec. Eco-Park in Brgy. Alangilan is already full while the three-hectare plant nursery in Don Salvador Benedicto is still operational.
On December 12, he said, the Alalay at Gabay sa Pag-unlad ng Pamayanan (AAGAPAY) headed by Dave Michael Sevilla will collect their 1,000 fruit trees seedlings from CENRO for the organization’s tree planting activity. (PIA-LOL)
