Life lessons from student nurses
What important lessons have you learned from your experience as a student nurse?
I posed this question during a press conference with the Mr. and Ms. Nursing 2009 candidates of the Student Nurses Association of the Philippines (SNAP) Iloilo Chapter. May their answers be a source of inspiration.
Mr. WVSU, Charles Andrew Chu-Santos shared that the keys to succeeding are discipline, hard work and commitment. He also stressed that there should be joy in doing one’s job or responsibilities.
Ms. WVSU, Reyna Tanales said, “Even in simple tasks like washing the dishes, you should not it not because you were asked to do so but because you know that what you’re doing will benefit the person you love. There is this feeling of achievement knowing that someone feels blessed with the care that you’ve given them,” she said.
Mr. USA, John Kevin Jereos said that he has seen patients dying but there are also some who lived. “Thus, I’ve learned to never give up. My team does not give up in giving care to our patients because it is our duty to promote life.”
Ms. USA, Beverly Joan Gregorios, espouses the value of simplicity so we could relate better to our underprivileged brothers and sisters. “This should be in the heart of every person,” she said.
Mr. IDC, Jairus Gelvezon, on the other hand, said that one should be complex in order to understand and deal well with people of different cultures and religions.
Ms. IDC, Evony Allisa said that one should be determined and willing to do a task assigned to him or her.
Mr. UI-PEN Christian Rey Marco admitted to having struggles especially in critical cases “but despite that, I learned to give priority to my patient.”
Ms. UI-PEN Stephanie Juanitas, said that a nurse should have strength (good resistance against illness), commitment (happy with what you have chosen) and flexibility (with nursing as a global course).
Mr. CPU Tynell Jonden Banas said that if you love something, everything else like determination, patience and other values, follow.
Ms. CPU Diana Angelie Jainga said that she was a different person before she took up nursing. “Now, I learned the value of altruism – that of sacrificing my needs to care for others as well as become devoted and committed.
Watch these smart students vie for the coveted Mr. and Ms. Nursing crown on Dec. 18, 6 PM at the University of San Agustin Gym.
