Bacolod City strictly prohibits burning of garbage
Bacolod City – The Bacolod City Environment and Natural Resource Office (ENRO) strictly prohibits the burning of garbage to lessen the carbon monoxide emission contribution of the city and is its commitment to the Climate Change issue.
ENRO Bacolod Chief Max Sillo said this message is being stressed in the office’ information, education campaign throughout the 61 barangays of the city.
He said the impending closure of the disposal facility located at Brgy. Felisa will, hopefully, take place sometime this month and will pave the way for the construction of a sanitary landfill to support the environmentally sound garbage disposal aims of Bacolod.
“We have no choice but to segregate our garbage and get into composting so that we can avoid burning of garbage that contributes to the thinning of our ozone layer,” he told PIA.
He said Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia and the rest of the public officials are supportive of the environmental issues facing the city and the entire country.
To be built at the cost of P30 million, the sanitary landfill is a result of the concerted effort of the city’s elected officials.
Once operational, the landfill will receive the residual waste because the biodegrable ones and other materials that can be recovered will be left in the barangay for productive disposal such as turning them into compost materials for “Gulayan sa Barangay” and other similar projects.
The landfill, Sillo said, will greatly reduce the volume of garbage the city produce and because only residual wastes are brought there, “it will be easy to manage,” he said. (PIA-LOL)
