Classes in Nabitasan Elem. School to go on: Principal
Classes at the Nabitasan Elementary School (NES) remain regular although all of its 18 classrooms are being used as evacuation center by some 500 families who lost their houses in a huge fire early morning of Saturday.
Radne Jomuad, principal of NES, in an interview with The News Today said they have prepared contingency measures to ensure that the schooling of their more than 400 students will not be affected.
He said, in lieu of the classrooms which are occupied by the fire victims they will be using the covered court for the classes of school children from Grades I to III. Classes for the Kinder pupils will be held at the Nutrition Center while the students from Grades IV to VI will hold classes on shaded areas of the school, meaning under the trees.
Jomuad said the city government through Mayor Jerry Treñas vowed to provide tents, black boards and school supplies for students who had been affected by fire.
Jomuad said around 150 students in their school are included as fire victims.
Even with the present situation of the school, Jomuad called on all the parents to send their children to school as classes will remain regular.
“We can’t sacrifice the children’s classes especially that we are nearing the end of the school year,” Jomuad said.
To note, NES is a consistent top performing elementary school in the Division of Iloilo City in the annual National Achievement Test.
Meanwhile, Brgy. Capt. Noriel Arsulo said that they had already started talks with the Iloilo City Urban Poor Affairs Office (Icupao) as regards the scheme to be implemented in the return of affected families to their previous places.
Arsulo said they are also asking for donations of materials which could be used by the fire victims in putting up their houses again.
To note, more than 500 families temporarily taking refuge in two evacuation centers in Brgy. Nabitasan, La Paz are in need of food and clothings as most of them barely saved anything from their burned houses.
