SP to probe controversial rice shipment
BACOLOD CITY — Sangguniang Panglungsod Member Al Victor Espino, chair of the Committee on Police Matters, Order and Security, passed recently a resolution urging the Sangguniang Panglungsod to form a committee of the whole that will conduct legislative inquiry relative to the entry of suspicious substance mixed with the National Food Authority (NFA) rice shipment at the Bredco port recently.
Espino said that he wants to be clarified on the reports that there was a misdeclaration of shipment from the consignee.
Earlier, the substance was reportedly declared by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency as “N-methylephedrine” which is a precursor for the manufacture of methaphetamine hydrochloride or shabu. Later, however, it was declared that the substance was “ammonium sulfate” which is also a component to make an explosive.
To be invited in the said investigation in aid of legislation were the National Food Authority, PDEA and the National Bureau of Investigation.
