Town police chief to lose post over ‘shabby uniform’
What’s in a police uniform?
A chief of police in Iloilo town was recommended for relief after he was caught donning a shabby uniform.
It was unfortunate that when Chief Insp. Willy Diel of Dingle town donned an improper uniform, no less than PNP Regional Director Chief Supt. Isagani Cuevas was there to witness it.
Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) director Senior Supt. Renato Gumban revealed that Cuevas checked the implementation of checkpoints in Iloilo province last February 9.
At around 10:50 a.m. in Dingle, Cuevas was allegedly stunned to see Diel in improper uniform.
“Wala siya headgear, wala siya sang pistol rig kag ang iya issued firearm was tucked on his back,” Gumban narrated.
Indeed, the provincial police chief that it was “very improper” considering that Diel is the PNP’s chief in Dingle.
In their previous inspections, Gumban said that he repeatedly cautioned his men against wearing of improper uniform, “even the manner they pinned their nameplates and the improper way a rig is attached,” he said.
Because of what happened, Gumban bared that he recommended Diel to be relieved from his post.
“They should set an example because their subordinates are bound to follow what they see. That’s a failure of leadership,” he added.
It was learned that Diel formed part of the 12 town police chiefs who were recommended to vacate their post.
Others, however, were included in the list because of exigency of service and they have exceeded the two-year tour of duty.
The 12 are the second batch of chiefs of police who were recommended to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) for relief.
The first batch was composed of 11 officers.
“There is still a third batch but we need to get the approval of the first and second batches because the third batch will depend on the approval of the first two batches,” Gumban said.
The IPPO chief said that some of police officers of the first batch are those who were earlier admonished for their failure to conduct checkpoints.
Gumban added that they will also be relieving chiefs of police who only hold a rank of police inspector.
It was gathered that COMELEC only approved the relief and the temporary assignment of the successor of Chief Insp. Jerry Caspillo of Calinog town.
Caspillo is due for retirement.
