DILG encourages LGUs to commemorate EDSA anniversary
ROXAS CITY – The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is encouraging all local chief executives (LCE) to commemorate the 24th anniversary of the EDSA Prayerful and Peaceful People Power Revolution.
The request is stipulated in a Memorandum Circular No. 2010 -11 which also suggested activities like flag raising ceremony, ecumenical prayer, short messages by LCEs or officials on the principles and values of the EDSA revolution, and other similar activities appropriate for the commemoration.
This year’s theme for the EDSA commemoration is “Diwa ng EDSA Gabay Sa Ating Kinabukasan.”
President Gloria Macapagal – Arroyo has also declared that there will be no classes in all schools on Feb. 22 as it will be a special holiday in commemoration of the EDSA anniversary.
The declaration is embodied in Presidential Proclamation No. 1841.
The EDSA Revolution was a series of nonviolent and prayerful mass street demonstrations from Feb. 22 to 25, 1986 which restored and ushered political, social and economic reforms in the country.
It also served as an inspiration for subsequent non-violent demonstrations around the world including those that ended the communist dictatorships of Eastern Europe. (PIA/A.Lumaque)
