Guimaras holds consultation for traffic experiment
The Municipal Planning Office of Jordan, Guimaras held a public consultation for Social Experiment on Traffic to address prevailing major traffic problems in the area.
The activity was undertaken with experts from the Metro Iloilo Guimaras Development Council (MIGEDC) under a grant from the Japan international Cooperation Agency (JICA), and participated in by barangay officials, traffic enforcers, officers of jeepney associations, market supervisor and a school principal and Engr. Rodolfo Gamarcha, Planning Officer.
A press release from the MIGEDC-JICA project team said that traffic problems start from the wharf, which serves as the gateway to the province’s current and prospective tourism alternatives.
The team and the participants said the area itself has no ample space for a terminal for PUJs and tricycles whose flow in and out of the area is not well regulated, resulting to congestion and confusion in loading and unloading of passengers.
They also noted that the prevailing problems, including those of Alibjon, San Miguel consist of the vendors who have taken over the façade of the market during market days leaving no space for PUJs to load and unload; the existence of more than 300 units of single motorbikes plying various routes including mountainous areas; absence of designated load and unloading bays along main roads; absence of street signs and street markings to guide or direct motorists and pedestrians for enforcement of traffic ordinances; and, rampant violations of traffic rules along major arterial road fronting the Guimaras Provincial Capitol.
The public consultation led to the implementation of the social experiment which involves installation of signages and strict implementation of existing ordinances, which started February 14 and will run till end of February. (MIGEDC-JICA/PIA6.)
