SP to discuss today request placing city under state of imminent danger
THE Sangguniang Panlungsod will once again tackle the proposal declaring the city under the state of imminent danger of a calamity in today’s regular session.
Majority Floor Leader Eduardo Penaredondo said there will be a division of the house after the committee on social services and disaster relief chaired by Councilor Jeffrey Ganzon rendered his committee report to the legislative body.
Ganzon’s committee conducted consultative hearings on the proposal placing Iloilo City under the state of imminent danger of a calamity after the council referred the request of the Iloilo City Disaster Coordinating Council (IDCC) to his committee. The proposal was in relation to the water shortage problem the city is facing now.
Surprisingly, punong barangays of barangays identified by the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) which are currently experiencing water shortage and are in the list of areas where water rationing is in effect, denied they are affected by the water shortage problem.
The observations of the punong barangays are contrary to the statements of their constituents who admitted the dry spell affected their water supply. The water from shallow wells is slowly drying up.
Penaredondo expects that in today’s regular session councilors belonging to the administration and opposition group will have contrasting views over the proposal.
Once the proposal is approved by the city council, this will authorize Mayor Jerry Trenas to spend the P4.5 requested calamity fund. The fund will be used to purchase water storage tanks among others.
