Aklan Governor’s Cup attracts 16 teams
KALIBO, Aklan — Sixteen teams are vying for honors in the exciting 2010 Governor Carlito S. Marquez Inter-Town Basketball Cup slated to start on April 4 to 28.
Sixteen towns in the province of Aklan except the town of Numancia will be joining the competition. They are divided into two groups, the Western teams represented by the towns of Makato, Tangalan, Lezo, Malinao, Ibajay, Nabas, Malay and Buruanga and the Eastern teams composed of the towns of Kalibo, New Washington, Batan, Altavas, Banga, Libacao, Balete and Madalag.
Each group will play a single round robin in the elimination phase of the summer basketball tournament at the playing venues of the participating towns. The covered courts of Ibajay, Lezo, Tangalan, Numancia, Libacao and Balete were identified as venues of the elimination rounds.
The top three teams in each bracket after the single round robin format will advance in the next round where all important games are played in the Gov. Augusto B. Legaspi Memorial Sports and Cultural Center. The semifinals fires off on April 15 en route to the championship games.
Last year, Banga team captured the Governor’s Cup in a deciding Game 3 victory against Numancia Builders. Guard Ricky Ricafuente of Banga, Aklan was named tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
This year’s tournament opening games kick off at the Gov. Augusto B. Legaspi Memorial Sports and Cultural Center between Banga and New Washington. (Boy Ryan B. Zabal)
