Blue Moon Rising
Blue moon. Some people say it is impossible and that it’s absurd. But since 1528, the term Blue Moon came in to use. It is usually the third full moon in a season, with four full moons or the second half full moon of a calendar month. This happens because each solar calendar year contains 11 days more than the lunar year of 12 lunations, thus when the extra days accumulate, there is an extra full moon every two or three years.
It is an astronomical phenomenon. In folklore, it is called blue moon because it came too early. The clergy call it the Lent moon. The clergy named the earlier moon as the “belewe moon” or the “betrayer moon”, so the Lent moon came at its expected time.
Since this is a rare event, things that happen rarely are now called “once in a blue moon.” Do you remember the song Blue Moon of Frank Sinatra?
Anyway, the month of March ends to usher in Lent. The first week of April 2010 is Lent week. The Lent Moon appears and ushers in the Lent Moon. The Blue Moon of Lent came during the last few days of March 2010. I-Travel took time and documented it. Enjoy the rare images!
