DSWD to release P57M for anti-hunger program in WV
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office VI is releasing a total of P57,939,000 for the implementation of its anti-hunger program in Western Visayas.
Specifically, the amount will be used for the implementation of the Food for School Program—a program which provides a daily ration of 1 kilogram of rice per pre-schooler in 27 municipalities in the Region. This will last for 70 days and will benefit a total of 41,385 pre-schoolers in 1,034 Day Care Centers;
“This is one of the programs of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo under the Accelerated Hunger Mitigation which responds to the problem of hunger,” said Joel P. Galicia, OIC-Director of DSWD in the Region.
Under this program, the target areas are two municipalities in Aklan with a budget allocation of P3,157,000; 18 towns in Antique with a budget of P32,897,200; three municipalities in Iloilo with a budget of P8,138,200; and four municipalities in Negros Occidental with a budget of P13,746,600.
Specifically, target areas in Aklan are Madalag and Libacao; Anini-y, Barbaza, Belison, Bugasong, Caluya, Culasi, Hamtic, Laua-an, Libertad, Pandan, Patnongon, Sam Remegio, San Jose, Sebaste, Sibalom, Tibiao, Tobias Fornier and Valderrama in Antique; Carles, Concepcion and San Dionisio in Iloilo; and Salvador Benedicto, Calatrava, Cauayan and Moises Padilla in Negros Occidental.
As to number of beneficiaries, the program will reach a total of 2,255 pre-schoolers in 77 Day Care Centers in Aklan; 23,498 pre-schoolers in 627 Day Care Centers in Antique; 5,813 pre-schoolers in 145 pre-schoolers in Iloilo; and 9,813 pre-schoolers in 184 Day Care Centers in Negros Occidental.
In 2009, the DSWD served 502,163 children attending 13,788 day care centers in 495 cities/municipalities in 50 provinces of 16 regions nationwide, at an average of 96 days, distributing 53, 674,944 kilos of iron-fortified rice.
In Region 6 alone, a total of P24 million was released last year for the implementation of the program benefiting a total of 33,692 pre schoolers in 1,010 Day Care Centers.
