Some 274 jobseekers have found employment after they participated in the Jobs and Livelihood Fairs conducted by the Department of Labor and Employment 6 (DOLE 6) in the cities of Iloilo and Bacolod as part of the May 1 Labor Day celebration.
The 274 who were hired-on-the-spot for various local employments are among 3, 391 jobseekers who registered during the job fairs held at SM City Iloilo and Bacolod on May 1, according to the DOLE 6 data.
DOLE 6 data further revealed that around 3,348 job applicants also qualified for further interview/processing for local employment and 546 for overseas employment.
Stephanie Torda, a 21-year old Commerce undergraduate from Sambag, Jaro was among the thousands who tried their luck last Saturday at SM City Iloilo.
Torda heard about the activity in a local TV news program and considered this as a big opportunity to look for jobs suited to her skills and experiences in one venue which saved her time, expenses and efforts.
To Lyndre Buenavista, Office Staff of Hotel del Rio in Iloilo City, the event is a big help for them to look for qualified applicants for their vacant positions. He received about 200 applications during the jobs fair.
The jobs fair is a strategy of DOLE that intends among others to facilitate employment to be within reach of the poor, unemployed and displaced workers as well as provide venue for the immediate meeting of jobs and people in order to minimize transportation and other expenses especially on the part of the applicants.
