Uygongco Foundation, Inc. donates P3.5M to DepEd’s Adopt-a-School Program
The La Filipina Uygongco Corporation (LFUGC) through its Chairman, Alfonso A. Uy, has announced that it is donating three million five hundred thousand pesos to the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Adopt-A-School Program through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm, the Uygongco Foundation, Inc.
Secretary, Hon. Mona D. Valisno of the Department of Education welcomed this boost to the program saying partnerships like this enable the DepEd further to address access, quality and relevance issues. The Secretary quipped during the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement with the LFUGC on April 26, 2010 at the Conference Room of the Office of the Secretary of Education, that she hoped more partners from the private sector will follow suit.
“We are grateful to the LFUGC for this assistance which helps the Department of Education in its commitment to enable our public schools to be more competitive and responsive to the human development needs of our country,” Secretary Valisno said. “We raise our invitation to friends in the private sector to partner with us in the nation’s development, particularly in the improvement of the public education system.”
Mr. Uy shared that this initial gift is just the start of a long-term commitment of the foundation to promote human development especially for poor and marginalized people. “We aim to help improve access to basic education through simple but meaningful engagements with the communities through the improvement of day care centers, scholarships for poor yet deserving students, as well as support to teachers,” Mr. Uy explained. “To help improve quality of education, we will be providing assistance on the procurement of additional learning materials, providing health and nutrition assistance; teachers’ training and values education.”
Republic Act 8525, otherwise known as “An Act Establishing the Adopt-A-School Program and Providing Incentives Therefore and for Other Purposes”, was enacted to encourage private companies to assist in the delivery of better quality education to public schools in the country, particularly in the poverty-stricken provinces;
