LTO records 21,398 erring drivers in Q1 of 2010
Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Western Visayas reported a total of 21,398 violators of various transportation laws in the first quarter of this year.
Of the total figure, 1,408 were recorded by the Kalibo District Office in Aklan, 1,059 in Antique, 710 in Dumalag Extension Office in Capiz; and 1,683 in Roxas City District Office.
Iloilo City district office has recorded 5,461 violators while Guimaras Extension Office has 488.
In Iloilo province, Barotac Viejo Extension Office recorded 1,240 violators followed by Calinog District Office with 1,225; and Guimbal Extension Office, 488.
Meanwhile, Bacolod City Operations Unit recorded 2,897 violators, Negros Occidental particularly Cadiz District Office with 1,560; Himamaylan District Office, 1,284; Pontevedra Extension Office, 918; and San Carlos City District Office, 842.
According to Teocel Umadhay, officer-in-charge of LTO’s Planning and Monitoring Section, common violations are driving without license, driving with delinquent or invalid license, failure to carry driver’s license, driving under influence of liquor or prohibited drugs, no early warning device, no brake light and plate light, driving with student permit, not visible plates, and obstruction.
Umadhay said that LTO enforcers are not hesitant to arrest violators of transportation laws and fine them with appropriate penalties ranging from P150 to P2,500.
“If they don’t want to be arrested, they should observe our transportation laws”, she told The News Today in a recent interview.
Umadhay added that most violators are drivers of utility vehicle, truck, tricycle, motorcycle, sports utility vehicle and taxi.
She said, as of the present, 18,512 cases were already resolved by the agency.
Last year of the same period, the LTO-6 has arrested 18,788 violators while for the whole year of 2009, a total of 65,901 violators were apprehended by the said agency.
