FCU planning to offer more courses: officials
ROXAS CTIY – Officials of the newly declared Filamer Christian University said they are conducting a feasibility study to determine the viability of offering more courses especially those not yet offered by other schools in Capiz.
Jessie Contreras, a member of the board of trustees, said that among the courses being considered are Law and Dentistry.
But before that, he welcomes the students who will be the first graduates of the FCU, he said.
FCU President Expedito Señeres, who presented the Commission on Higher Education certificate granting the school a university status, said the former Filamer Christian College became a university after 106 years of existence, and he thanked its board of trustees, faculty, and employees for the success.
“I did not expect a grand welcome , a hero’s welcome like (the one given to) Manny Pacquiao,” said Señeres, who arrived from Manila on Friday.
The FCU is granted a university status in accordance with the pertinent provision of Republic Act No. 7722, otherwise known as the “Higher Education Act of 1994”, and by virtue of Resolution No. 186-2010 dated July 14, 2010 of the Commission en banc which signed by Emmanuel Y. Angeles, chairman.
Señeres said the CHED also granted Cagayan Colleges a university status together with the FCU.
Atty. Mariano Dioso said despite the school’s university status, there will be no increase in tuition. Instead, FCU will set a high standard for its faculty members who are required to have doctorate degrees.
Currently, 50 percent of FCU faculty members have master’s degrees while 25 percent, have doctorate degrees.
Earlier, three CHED commissioners, Luningning Misuarez-Umar, Nona Ricafort and William Medrano, visited the school for a final evaluation before granting it a university status.
FCU becomes the second university in the province, the first being the Capiz State University with a main campus in Roxas City, and branches in Dumarao, Pontevedra, Pilar, Mambusao, Sapian, Tapaz, and Jamindan towns.
FCU, an affiliate of Capiz Emmanuel Hospital, is a sister school of Central Philippine University and Iloilo Mission Hospital in Iloilo City (not St. Paul Hospital as earlier reported).
