Eco-park soon to rise at Calajunan dumpsite
The three-hectare old Calajunan dumpsite located in Mandurriao district, Iloilo City will soon be converted into an ecological park.
The old dumpsite that was closed since last year is now covered with soil and ready to be developed, Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
Presently, the end portion of the 23-hectare Calajunan dumpsite is being used as the new dumping site for the almost 170 metric tons of collected garbage everyday.
To continue the success of the project, Mabilog has offered to render civil rites for marrying couples provided that they will plant a tree at the dumpsite area before getting a marriage certificate from the City Hall.
In fact, Mabilog has already ordered dumpsite manager Neil Ravena to reserve and designate a Wedding Park at the old dumpsite area.
Aside from trees, flowers and other ornamental plants will also be planted at the area.
The city is also starting to develop a sanitary landfill in the area as recommended by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ).
An initial 10 hectares have been earmarked for a sanitary landfill while the rest will be reserved as dumping sites.
