Makati donates books to Iloilo town
The city government of Makati recently donated books to New Lucena, Iloilo and two other towns, including La Paz, Leyte and Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro, a report of the Philippine News Agency said.
Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr. said since education is among the top priorities of the city government, it has done its best to extend its promotion of quality education to public school students in other localities in the provinces especially its sister cities and municipalities.
“Books are one of the important things a student needs. Without it, their learning becomes limited to what the teacher discusses in the classroom,” the mayor said.
“Even a whole day in a classroom is not enough to learn everything that a child needs to know. Books and other learning materials are very essential in supplementing the knowledge they acquire while in school,” he added.
Based on a report of the General Services Department of the city, a total of 6,523 books were released for donation from January to June alone.
These were distributed as follows: 1,523 to New Lucena, Iloilo; 2,500 to La Paz, Leyte; and 2,500 to Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro.
The city government of Makati has been donating used textbooks and other school equipment to public schools of small communities in the provinces since December of 2001 as part of its efforts to help improve the quality of education in the country.
They have also given scholarships to under privileged but deserving students, who were accommodated at the city-owned and managed University of Makati.
