Business group seeks widening of city roads
The Iloilo Business Club is lobbying for the widening of circumferential roads in Iloilo City going to the provinces.
Leah Lara, executive director of the IBC, said that they have endorsed their statement to the office of the city mayor and the provincial governor their call for a wider and better road network.
Lara said that all businessmen agree that a better and wider road network is essential for business, especially in transporting goods and cargoes. She pointed that most thriving small business ventures are relying on the road to keep up with their business growth.
Likewise, bad and narrow roads could mean lesser economic activity as new businesses prefer areas with fast and easy access, she added.
The IBC is also calling on the government to pursue its project through the Department of Public Works and Highways to work on the coastal road going to Antique province. IBC laments that the road going to Antique has been a boon to business for its bad condition and unfinished road concreting.
IBC also said that the remaining part of Jalandoni Road going to the Diversion road in Iloilo City should be finished immediately as well as the widening of the Montinola Bridge. These road projects should be included in the national government’s General Appropriations Act this year, she said.
Meantime, IBC is currently focusing on their better infrastructure project in cooperation with the Research and Education Institute Development Foundation, the Asia Foundation and the USAID. The IBC is working and coordinating with these foundations on the various road projects in Iloilo City, said Lara. PNA
