Facility for special kids opens
The city government together with the Department of Education-Division of Iloilo City has completed a two-storey building that will serve as Assessment-Guidance Center and Parent-Infant Program facility for the use of children with special needs.
Costing P2 million, the new building was turned-over recently to SPED-Integrated School for Exceptional Children (SPED-ISEC) in Gen. Luna St., City Proper.
The facility was a project of former mayor, now Rep. Jerry Treñas, who was also then the chairperson of the Iloilo City Local School Board (ICLSB), with City Schools Superintendent Erlinda Gencaya and SPED-ISEC Principal Elizabeth Orquiola.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, new ICLSB chairman, said he continues to support endeavors that help enhance the quality of education in the city.
Helping the city realize the project was the Japan Ear Foster Parent, a non-government organization assisting children with hearing loss in the Philippines.
The Assessment-Guidance Center offers various services such as individual inventory, individual and family counseling, follow-up consultation for students, homeroom guidance, vocational career talks, values clarification, mental ability tests for SPED-ISEC students and for city public schools, and other surrounding divisions.
It also offers assessments for children with special needs.
Hearing impaired children aged zero to three years old can also avail of early intervention through the PIP facility.*
