Public schools to join dengue clean-up: DepEd
The Department of Education has expressed full support to the synchronized “People Power Do-Day Kontra Dengue” in Iloilo City and Province tomorrow.
Education Regional Director Mildred Garay said the holding of the massive clean-up is commendable amid the increasing number of dengue cases that has afflicted even school children.
The massive clean-up has been initiated by Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. because of the high number of dengue cases in the province.
As of August 24, Iloilo has recorded 2,793 cases and 16 deaths.
The Iloilo city government is also conducting a massive clean-up in a parallel intervention to prevent and control dengue.
Garay said that even before the opening of classes, the DepEd has already alerted school officials about dengue, and agency personnel together with doctors are monitoring the situation in the schools.
The massive clean-up will be held from 8 a.m. to noon and will be followed by in-house cleaning in the afternoon to culminate with the “4 o’clock habit.”
Meanwhile, fogging operations were conducted in 14 public elementary schools, including the DepEd Division of Iloilo City office, to eliminate dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
Records show most dengue patients in the city are five to 14-year-olds, with 225 cases out of the 387 reported as of August 20.
The two-day activity held on August 29 and yesterday was spearheaded by the Chinese-Filipino Business Club Inc., which also gave the City Government information and education campaign materials on dengue and how to prevent its spread.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the fogging operation is safe for everyone as a water-based chemical will be used that will not harm the environment or public health.*
