Key employment generators in Western Visayas bared
The Department of Labor and Employment 6 has disclosed key employment generators in Western Visayas through its Project Jobs Fit: The DOLE 2020 Vision in an attempt to address mismatch in employment.
The “Project Jobs Fit: The DOLE 2020 Vision” identified preferred skills in priority industries and also some gaps , and came up with recommendations to address the issues through a series of regular consultations attended by stakeholders and key players, Labor Regional Director Manuel Roldan said.
The result of the study revealed that the region has as its priority industries the cyber services, tourism (tourism (health, wellness and medical), hotels and restaurants, agribusiness and fishery, construction and wholesale and retail trade.
Meanwhile, the emerging industries include renewable energy and biofuel, real estate development, transport and logistics and small scale mining.
Further, the study revealed that for emerging industries, the chemical engineer and chemist are hard to fill skills while gantry operators, crane, backhoe operators as well as safety engineers are hard to fill skills for transport and logistics.
For real estate development, the hard to fill skills are heavy equipment operators and safety engineers while for mining the in-demand but hard to fill skills are loaders, surveyors, miners, geodetic engineers, mechanical engineers, geologist, chemist, safety engineers, laboratory technicians, drillers and blasters.
Roldan said the data will be given to end users such as the academe, industries, and parents.
He said the challenge now is “how to encourage new offerings and abandon the traditional ones because they are no longer relevant” also to “influence parents to make intelligent decisions to secure their children.”
The result will be presented to industries, business sector, academe and representative from emerging and priority industries to ask their inputs on how to address the identified gaps, Roldan added.*PNA
