Iloilo City reactivates council for the protection of children
The Iloilo City Council for the Protection of Children has been reconstituted in a move to make it more responsive to the needs of its clients and provide a friendlier environment for the children in the city.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog recently signed Executive Order 017-b redefining the membership of the council as well as its functions, among others.
To recall, the council was created in response to the Memorandum Circular 2002-121 which enjoined “all local chief executives to organize the city and barangay councils that shall take the lead in the implementation of all children’s programs in the locality and provide funds thereof.”
The council is presently being chaired by Mabilog and co-chaired by Alfredo Villanueva, the city’s City Social Welfare and Development Officer.
Its membership is composed of representatives from non-government organizations, national government agencies, academe, media, among others.
Based on the EO, the council shall “formulate plans, programs and policies for children that are gender-fair, culturally relevant and responsive to the needs of diverse groups of children 0 to below 18 years old.”
It also must prepare the annual word and financial plans likewise coordinate with agencies and institutions in the planning, monitoring and evaluation of plans for children.*PNA
