Defensor: Repair city transport terminals
Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. said he is looking forward to the establishment of world-class passenger terminal facilities in the city and province of Iloilo.
For a start, Defensor urged the Iloilo city government to repair its terminals, especially those catering to passengers going to the towns.
He said that terminals should be at par with world standards because tourists frequent the countryside.
During his foreign trips, he has noticed that terminals in other countries are being maintained properly, he said.
Defensor said that passengers heading to the city to work and study everyday suffer from the very poor condition of jeepney and bus terminals.
These structures have been left behind in terms of modern facilities and operations, he added.
The governor advised Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog to review the state of city’s existing terminals and the traffic laws that govern jeepney routes.
Defensor said he is willing to sit down with the mayor to make sure that the future terminal projects in Iloilo are at par with the passenger terminals abroad.
Most of the workers in the city are from the province, and they are utilizing the services of these terminals daily, he said.
Mabilog had earlier said the city plans to check the effects of the terminals to the volume of traffic in the city and to also see how to improve their services.
He also noted the need to establish bigger terminals in the future to cater to the increasing volume of commuters.*PNA
