Roof deck garden for new city hall
Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog yesterday said he is keen on putting up a roof deck garden at the new Iloilo City Hall building.
Mabilog said that he will see to it that there will be a landscaped garden at the roof deck of the new city hall for the greening project of the city.
Local governments in other countries are practicing roof deck gardening for their buildings and new infrastructures, especially offices.
He said that the roof deck garden would be the first among the city halls in the region.
Mabilog said it is just one of his projects under the sanitation and environment programs of the city. He said that the new city hall building would set an example for the roof deck garden and that future buildings could imitate.
Likewise, he said the City Council might consider having an ordinance requiring new buildings to put up a roof deck garden.
Roof deck gardens have been known to reduce the heat being absorbed by the building as the plants on top also absorb the heat instead. This practice has been scientifically proven to be eco-friendly.
Plants that will be used in the city hall roof deck garden will be taken from the city nursery which has been propagating plants for the city greening project. Most of these plants are planted along the islands along the streets, as well as in highways and in the eco-park in the Calajunan dumpsite in Mandurriao.
The new city hall building is currently being constructed at Plaza Libertad and is set to open early next year.*
