Iloilo City to switch on lights, lanterns on Nov. 19
The Iloilo City Government will launch its “A Fair in December” project tomorrow with the simultaneous switching on of lights and lanterns in district plazas and major streets.
More than 400 lights and lanterns will be turned on at exactly 5:45 p.m. in the district squares of Jaro, La Paz, Molo, Arevalo, Mandurriao and Libertad, and Plazoleta Gay area, and main thoroughfares.
The installation of Christmas decors in these venues has been made possible through the help of the business community. At least 20 establishments and businesses and private institutions are taking part in the endeavor to provide a brighter and merrier Christmas for the Ilonggos.
A short program before the countdown in each venue will be held.
City officials headed by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog will be at their designated locations to spearhead the ceremonial switching on of lights and lanterns using a prototype switch.
The City Engineer’s Office will take care of the main electrical control for all areas.
City Tourism and Development Officer Benito Jimena said the project clearly shows the strong public-private partnership the city is known for.
The City Government plans to make this a yearly event and become one of the main attractions before to Dinagyang festival every January, he said.
Donors of the Christmas decors are Robinsons Place Iloilo, GMA Iloilo, Mang Inasal, San Miguel Brewery, Pilipinas Shell, ABS-CBN, City Square, Amigo Hotel and Mall, Atrium Mall, Asia Brewery, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., Smart, J.S. Layson Construction, Mesa Drugstore, Socorro Drugstore, FF Cruz and Co., Toyota Iloilo, Punta Villa Resort, Alpha Crest Foundation, Panay Energy Development Corp., JD Bakeshop, and Pepsi Cola Products Phils., Inc.
Sky Cable and Cable Star also helped install the lights and lanterns.*
