DTI ensures enforcement of consumers’ protection
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), in complying with President Benigno Simeon Aquino III’s pledge to “make our nation very desirable to business” is working hard to sustain economic prosperity.
In line with this economic thrust, the DTI is pushing through with its information campaign on consumers’ welfare, protection and rights, Director Victorio Mario Dimagiba of the Bureau of Trade Regulation and Consumer Protection, said.
Dimagiba said they have adopted more aggressive protection of consumer rights by means of consumer education and advocacy; stricter implementation of product testing and compliance standards; and increased enforcement activities.
For its information campaign, Dimagiba cited the DTI’s posting of suggested retail price (SRP) in supermarkets and publishing them in newspapers and giving notices to consumers to buy quality and safe Christmas lights.
He pointed out that consumers have three basic rights – replace, refund and repair – which they have to exercise to obtain a conducive and satisfactory purchase.
Dimagiba admitted they have a problem with the present price of sugar in the market.
He explained they have to lift the SRP for sugar as they could not do anything about the shortage of its supply. He said though that by January, the DTI’s Price Council will impose SRP after deliberating on how much would they suggest.
With this, the price increase for bread is inevitable so he endorsed the Pinoy Tasty, a Filipino product, which costs only P36.*PNA
