Techno promotions of Darag native chicken to take off
"Darag," the Ilonggos' well-loved native chicken, will finally get the media attention it deserves.
The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (Pcarrd) through its regional consortium, the Western Visayas Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium (Wesvarrdec) recently formed a multi-agency team to develop information, education and communication (IEC) materials for the S&T Anchor Program for Philippine Native Chicken.
The team is tasked to develop IEC modalities to promote and popularize native chicken in the country.
Specifically, the team will produce different forms of IEC materials to provide vital information on the reproduction and hatchery management of native chicken, production of improved native day-old and "hardened" chicks, free-range native chicken production system; and slaughtering and marketing of native chicken.
The materials are expected to provide relevant S&T-based information that will enhance the knowledge and capabilities of farmers, breeders, and other stakeholders in the production and marketing of native chicken.
As part of its advocacy campaign, the team will conduct series of information services which include participation to Kasadyahan festival, fairs and exhibits, multimedia presentation, information caravans, TV and radio guestings, publication of Darag Bulletin and Philippines Recommends for Philippine Native Chicken, and conduct of Manokan Festival and Agricultural Fair.
The team is also hopeful that through this IEC component, native chicken raisers will be encouraged to use market and pricing information system and will have access to available credit facilities and technology services.
