OWWA pushes thru new 2007-2008 scholars
Another batch of qualified beneficiaries/dependents of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) here in Western Visayas will be given the opportunity to pursue their college education through the Educational Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
OWWA 6 Project -In-Charge Marne Halanes said they are now accepting applicants for their EDSP for school year 2007-2008.
The grant is open to beneficiaries/dependents of OFWs who are active OWWA member aged not more than 21 years old, in good health and of good moral character and belong to the upper 20% of the High School graduating class.
Interested applicants, said Halanes, have until September 30, 2006 to submit their applications. A qualifying examination will be given on a date and venue that will be announced later.
Under the program, scholars can choose a four to five-year college course in any Commission on Higher Education (CHED) accredited schools with financial assistance not exceeding P30,000/semester.
Halanes said the program was launched three years ago and presently, 27 scholars in the region are benefiting in the program.
"We are supposed to have 31 scholars already but, unfortunately, the four have been terminated due to reasons of dropping their subjects without informing us or have failed to maintain the required academic performance", said Halanes.
Last year, more than 400 applicants from the region took the qualifying examination. Sixteen qualified out of the 100 slots nationwide, giving the region the most number of EDSP recipients for this school year.
Halanes said they hope to surpass last year's number of applicants so that more OFWs and their dependents can benefit from this program of the government.
