THE FULLNESS OF LIFE
Meditation: Christian Approach
(7th of a Series)
Inner Silence
In our technological age where noise seems to be the obsession of many it helps preserve our sanity to regularly experience deep inner silence by habitual meditation.
While the constant barrage of noise that plagues our generation can be kept within tolerable distance by avoiding the busy streets or the malls where you feel helpless like a fly caught in a spider’s web as the din of noise wraps around you the moment you enter, such external noise can be more manageable than the mental noise and distractions that people regularly experience. There is a constant chattering and noise in the mind of the average individual such that the human mind was even compared to a forest teeming with gossipy monkeys.
Meditation is a must in a busy life where there is a stream of noise, ideas and images. There is a need of stepping out of the usual physical and mental environments that have dulled our sensitivity to experience the really real and enter into deep silence even for just a fleeting moment in the course of the day. This moment of deep silence which is experienced during meditation is a point of stillness where there is not a breeze of noise or thought or image. It is a moment of communion. It is a moment when the conscious is wedded to the subconscious and the false self fades away under the radiance of the true self. It is a moment when this creaturely worm experiences the tender condescension of the divine Transcendence stooping down to embrace it and let it taste and see how good the Lord is.
