Hunger mitigation program top priority in Antique's agenda
San Jose, Antique -- The Provincial Development Council -- Sectoral Committee met and discussed ways to integrate Hunger Mitigation Program in the Provincial Development Plan.
Nona Tad-y Regional Nutrition Officer discussed the framework of the Hunger Mitigation Program which include among others increasing food production, enhancing efficiency of logistics and food delivery, enterprise development and access to microfinance, strengthening social insurance and population management.
Antique is one of the Priority 2 of the Anti-Hunger Mitigation Program of the government.
Hunger is caused by unavailability or insufficiency of food to eat or even lack of money to buy food. To address the problem government has designed the above intervention and urged affected communities and families to cooperate and take initiatives to overcome hunger and become self-reliant.
Hunger mitigation indicators that cut across all sectors will be considered in the preparation of the Provincial Development Plan to get corresponding slice of the budget both from the local and national funds, said Aurelia Gonzaga, Planning Officer IV of the Provincial Planning and Development Office.
Social Development Committee also agreed to conduct series of meetings in preparation for the Executive and Legislative Agenda of the province for 2008-2010 which will address among others hunger mitigation, health & nutrition and population development, education and manpower, early child care and development, housing, peace and order and sports development program.
Dr. Norman Tanchuan, Provincial Health Officer was elected Chairman of the Social Development Committee with Larzaro Petinglay as co-Chair. " Our interventions should give priority to families of malnourished children for them to earn a living and improve their capacity to sustain their families", said Tanchuan.
