Iloilo farmers to train at RP's first climate school
Some 90 farmers in Dumangas town will train in the climate field school established in the municipality.
The climate field school is the country's first, and only the second in Asia, after Indonesia.
Climate field school coordinator Pablo Dimaisip said the farmers consist the second batch of trainees.
A total of 88 graduates from three barangays comprised the first set, which finished their 12-week course in September last year.
Training for the second batch is set starting in June, up until September this year.
Just recently, the municipality received a financial assistance of an estimated US$ 3,000 from Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) in Thailand for the schooling of the second batch in the climate field school.
Dimaisip, who is also the town's municipal agriculturist, said "farmers learn a lot of scientific farming, through the use of facilities of the agro-meteorological station."
The agro-met is a climate change and forecasting center established five years ago by the local government unit in cooperation with ADPC, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), and International Research Institute for Climate Prediction (IRICP).
"Aside from learning integrated farming practice, farmers also get their daily weather advisories from the forecasting station to guide them in their farming activities," Demaisip said. (PNA)
