Refer to price billboards, DTI tells consumers
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) urged anew consumers to always refer to Price Billboards in determining the latest prevailing prices of agricultural and basic commodities in wet markets.
In Iloilo City, there are three price billboards which were turned-over by DTI-Iloilo to the city government three years ago. These billboards are installed at the Iloilo Central Market, Iloilo Terminal Market and Lapaz Market.
DTI Undersecretary for Consumer Welfare Zenaida Cuison Maglaya said in a press report that they have coordinated with market masters who are responsible for the daily update of the Price Billboards to make sure that they register the correct prevailing prices.
Maglaya identified some of the processed commodities listed on the price billboards as canned fish and meat, instant noodles, powdered milk; and coffee and agricultural products such as rice, meat, poultry, fish and vegetables.
DTI reported that they have already set up a total of 216 price billboards where 53 of these were allocated to Metro Manila, 26 to Region III, and 21 to Region IV-A. On the other hand, DTI's regional and provincial offices, with the support of local government units in their respective areas were able to install 142 price billboards comprising of 79 in Region I and 63 in Regions II, V, VI, VIII, X, XI, XII and CAR.
Maglaya added that price guides will be published in newspapers to inform consumers where prices are low so that consumers can exercise their right to choose and buy products that suit budget best.
To further protect consumers, DTI increase its market visibility to check on retailers refusing to place price tags on their products and assist LGU officials in the crackdown versus faulty weighing scales which are violations of the Consumer Act's provisions on weights and measures.
Also, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has asked Congress to enact a Consumers Bill of Rights that would help reinforce the protection and defense of consumers and at the same time strengthen the "penalties against those individuals or entities that abuse the right of our people to this basic commodity."
The public are also encouraged to report complaints in price and/or quality, NFA rice diversion, hoarding and profiteering activities to DTI Direct 751-3330 from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday or call the nearest DTI Regional and Provincial offices. Also, complaint may be sent by keying in DTI<space>message and send to 9290 for both Globe and Smart subscribers. (PIA)
