Leonardia: City helped BANEG
BACOLOD CITY – Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday clarified that the city government has extended help to the Bacolod City - Negros Occidental (BANEG) softball league contrary to reports allegedly being spread by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) that the city did not help the league which just arrived from China.
Leonardia yesterday asked City Councilor Homer Bais to present the detailed support given by the local government to BANEG headed by their coach Antonio Oquindo. Bais said that it is not true that the city never responded to their needs. "Record shows that the city extended 100,000 pesos assistance during their last competition in China."
Bais said that during the competition held in Kirkland, Washington last year where they had participated, he and Councilor Al Victor Espino gave their full support and assistance. In this year's competition, however, he isolated himself from the group because of the questionable number of delegates that participated in the trip for the competition.
Bais is set to sponsor a resolution during the Sanguniang Panlungsod regular session on Wednesday to ask PSC Commissioner Eric Loretizo to reveal the 22 names which according to Loretizo, are questionable because they are not part of the team. Loretizo was said to have disclosed such information during an interview in a national media last week.
Bais said that the mayor is correct in saying that the "City has no obligation with Abaneg" because the team should have been supported by the national government because they represent not only Bacolod City, but likewise, they represent the Philippines.
