Forest Reserve, Maasin, Iloilo
The Iloilo Emerald Lions Club, Inc. held a tree planting at the Maasin Watershed Forest Reserve recently. Along with the students of the St. Augustine College of Nursing, they planted 300 seedlings.
During the trip, the club and the students witnessed the devastation that typhoon Frank has created. "It has basically changed some of the place's landscape," said Teresa Macalalag, club secretary.
Macalalag said that the last time she went there was July 2007 and the area was clean and in order. Now, the narrow and clean river has widened and has become rocky and muddy. The river has reached the waiting shed, in fact. The road towards the waiting shed, which can be reached by a car, is now unpassable. The debris brought about by the flood's current, are still piled up there.

These have been said many times, but I feel like it's my obligation to say this again. Trees could be the best friend you'll ever have, if you are aware why this should be planted and nurtured.
One value that trees give us is oxygen. We couldn't exist without this. It's been said that a leaf can actually provide oxygen for 10 people in a year. Trees also filter the air we breath, absorbs and locks away carbon dioxide, controls noise pollution and absorb the toxic chemicals that enter the soil. They fight soil erosion. They also provide shade and cool the earth.
They also protect us against flash flooding. Some trees could actually control thousands of gallons of water from coming to us. Typhoon Frank was a reminder on how having enough trees around could save us from another devastation like it.
