Bacolod City Library ranks no. 1 in Western Visayas
BACOLOD CITY -- The Bacolod City Government received yet another award, this time for the City Library that topped the 2009 Search for Outstanding City Libraries in Western Visayas.
As such, the Bacolod City Library joins the top six outstanding city libraries nationwide. The other oustanding libraries were from Davao City (Davao), Dagupan City (Pangasinan), Angeles City (Pampanga), Zamboaga City (Zamboanga) and Talisay City (Negros Occidental).
Mayor Evelio Leonardia said that the award is a clear indication of the city government’s strong support to various activities that promote education and learning. He also thanked the city government employees who were instrumental for the recognition.
Among the factors considered for the recognition were the programs, services and facilities provided by the city library to its clients.
Leonardia and City Librarian Merlyn Corpus had been invited to attend the awarding ceremonies to be held on November 3 in Manila.
The awarding ceremonies will highlight the opening of the month-long celebration of the Library and Information Services Month spearheaded by the National Committee on Library and Information Services of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, in cooperation with the National Library of the Philippines and the Philippine Librarians Association, Inc.
Bacolod City was also recently cited as the Top Regional Performer for its Public Employment Services Office and had been cited as finalist for the national award. The city is likewise a regional finalist for the 2009 Search for Excellence in Local Governance awards.
Bacolod, since 2004, had been a recipient of various regional and national awards. These awards include the Top 3 Best City Disaster Coordinating Council, the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) award, Most Business Friendly City, Most Child Friendly City, Most Disabled Friendly City, Most Competitive Mid-size City, and Best Public Sector award among others.
