NPC assures no blackout in Dinagyang-Treņas

National Power Corporation (NPC) will not allow a power blackout to happen in the city during the two-day highlight of the Dinagyang Festival slated January 28 and 29.
City Mayor Jerry Treņas told City Hall beat reporters Tuesday, the NPC foresees the "economic implications" should total power blackout happen in the city.
Panay Power Corporation (PPC) earlier warned to shutdown its 72 MW diesel plant in Brgy. Ingore, La Paz starting January 23 due to lack of fuel to run its machines.
Treņas said NPC officials assured him that National Transmission Commission (Transco) will work out the interconnection from the NPC to the PPC to avert the grim scenario of a power-less city. However, the mayor said, the interconnection process will take some time.
Treņas added, officials of NPC and Shell are threshing out some legal issues on the terms of payment to be made by PPC. The NPC acted as guarantor for Shell to deliver bunker fuel to PPC to make sure its supply to Panay Electric Company (Peco) is not interrupted. PPC officials, however, said they can pay Shell on cash basis but only until March.
Treņas admitted it has come to a point that the city is always the subject of threats because of the problem between PPC and PECO. "There should be long term solution and not just a short term solution to the city's power problem," the mayor pointed.
As of press time, there is an on going talk among the officials of PPC, NPC, and Peco in relation to the pressing power problem in the city.
The mayor said if given the chance he will allow other power producers to enter and provide the city of its power needs. The available alternative power that could ease the problem of the city is the presence of a coal-fired power plant.
