New abattoir opens in July
The new modern city slaughterhouse now nearing completion in Jaro district will be fully operational by July this year.
Mayor Jerry P. Treñas told members of the Iloilo City Hall Press Corps that the construction of the double AA abattoir financed by the Department of Agriculture in a 2.3-hectare lot in Barangay Tacas is expected to be completed before the end of the second quarter.
Treñas said that once finished and operational, the new facility will ensure easier and safer meat production. The P16-million project also includes the establishment of a waste water treatment facility, a holding pen and a water system, the mayor added.
Only recently, Treñas revealed that a P10-million grant from the Office of the President was approved for use by the city government to construct the animal pens and the purchase of equipment.
Treñas said the completion of the new slaughterhouse manifests the coordinated efforts of national agencies and the city government to provide better and safe services to city residents. "The new facility will likewise enable the city to maximize revenue emanating from its operation," the mayor pointed out.
Once the new abattoir is in full operation, Treñas said the old city slaughterhouse in Molo district will be sold at public auction.
