OWWA bares new scholars
Sixteen incoming college students from Western Visayas qualified for the Educational Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) for the school year 2006 - 2007.
These 16 scholars are a ll dependents of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).
OWWA 6 Overseas Worker Welfare Officer III Noel Chavez said that Western Visayas has the most number of recipients under the EDSP this year, getting 16, out of the 100 slots nationwide. Around 403 applicants in the region took the examination last year.
Chavez said that 8 of these new scholars came from the province of Negros Occidental, 5 from Iloilo and one each from the provinces of Antique, Aklan and Guimaras.
The following are the new scholars: Grace Panes, Ferolyn Navallasca, Benette Jehan Manlapig, Joseph Eric Tumalaytay, Abcd Gjea Castro of Iloilo; Denise Marie Minerales, Francis Felix Baroa, John Russel Terrana, Jedd Michael Carcueva, Dawn Barrera, Gerlie Cuesta, Carla Peruelo, Anrea Rose Milan of Negros Occidental; Jessa Marie of Antique; Chastity Olaine Apolinario of Aklan; and Monzour Justin Mondia of Guimaras.
Chavez said the EDSP is one of the educational grants currently implemented by OWWA. This is open for dependents of active OFWs members of OWWA aged 21 years and below. Under this program, scholars can choose a four to five year course from any school with financial assistance not exceeding P30,000 per semester.
