Treñas mulls educational advancement for employees
Iloilo City -- Mayor Jerry P. Treñas has disclosed plans to enroll city government employees in the public management courses offered by the Ateneo School of Government (ASG).
Treñas issued the disclosure after Dr. Dennis Gonzalez, an ASG faculty member, provided the mayor and city department heads with an overview of the school and the courses it offers during the regular staff meeting at the executive office last March 27th. During his presentation, Gonzalez also discussed the advantages of ASG's teaching methods.
Gonzalez said the ASG offers a master in public management program (MPM), which is a 39-unit masteral degree and may take a year-and-a-half to accomplish, as well as short courses in public governance that may take only days to finish.
Gonzalez explained that the MPM program includes Power, Ethics and Accountability; Understanding the Bureaucracy; Applied Economics; Social Change and Development; Leadership in the Public Sector; and Public Policy Development and Analysis as its courses.
Among the advantages in availing of an educational program from the ASG, Gonzalez added, is that faculty members are composed of current and former government officials and a flexible schedule fitted for working professionals, among others.
Meanwhile, Treñas ordered all department heads to list down all interested employees who will avail of the educational program. The mayor said that he will also try to ask various international agencies that may help finance the study of the employees.
The estimated cost for the one-and-a-half year course is P100,000.
The mayor said he is quite keen on giving this opportunity as it will equip employees with the skills and knowledge to provide quality public service.
