Every 31st of May, faithfuls from all over the country gather to witness the much-awaited mayflower religious procession known as Santacruzan. Beautiful women, clad in extravangant gowns, awe the eager audiences as they walk pass them.
This year, the Iloilo City Cultural Heritage and Conservation Council (ICCHCC) worked together with the Designers Guild of Iloilo City (DGIC) to add glamor to the traditional Santacruzan. Considering that May is the Heritage Month and that Iloilo City will be hosting the closing ceremonies for this year's celebration, DGIC has prepared a dashing set of gowns for the ocassion.
Equipped with utmost creativity and rich imagination, five of Iloilo's top fashion genuises -- Don Protasio, Jaki Peñalosa, Bo Parcon, Argellete Borja-Ragus, and Sol Fernandez -- conceptualized the exquisite and equally stunning Filipiñanas. The designs were captivating, emphasizing the ultra-feminine and purely Filipina image.
Each of these haute couture trend setters' creations bear the traditional Filipiñana sleeves and embibes the sense of individuality of its designers.
Known for her intricate-sequined gowns, Argelette Ragus adorns her masterpiece with studs of beads . Ragus expresses her idea of feminism by adding leaf-like details to her creation. On the other hand, Don Protasio's piece is more relaxed and simple with an air of promising elegance. The sleeves and the facade are uniquely designed to feature Protasio's concept of natural Filipina.
Bo Parcon will surely make heads turn. Parcon's majestic work-of-art boasts a dreamy look. As evidenced by the alluring accents around the hip. Jaki Peñalosa breathe life to the classic Filipiñana. Her's is a figure-hugging bodice with a defined piece of cloth that runs from waist down.
These breathtakingly stunning gowns capture the galant culture, the undying devotion, and the distinctive taste of the Ilonggos.
