DILG pushes for ban on smoking, cellphone use in gas stations
Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno urged the local chief executives nationwide to enact and enforce ordinances that would strictly ban among others smoking and usage of cellular mobile phones while refueling in gasoline stations.
Secretary Puno issued the directive as he underscored that people?s safety is paramount anywhere.
In a memorandum circular, Puno reminded provincial governors and the city and municipal mayors of section 16 of the Local Government Code mandating them to ensure and support public safety as an essential element of general welfare.
Among the suggested restriction or prohibitions that such ordinances should include are smoking and using cellular mobile phones while refueling and refueling while the engine is running.
Puno also said that the safety and welfare of the people should always be the primary concern of the local government officials, that is, to protect their constituents from possible accident or death brought about by smoking and usage of cellular phones in gasoline stations.
He directed all regional and field offices of the DILG to monitor the compliance of LGUs and subsequently submit a report to his office.
In Iloilo City the ordinance on smoking is being given stronger impetus and support for its consistent implementation.
