Rational Insanity
The Wisdom of Karen
I believe I've written quite a number of pieces about the husky-moody voiced Karen Carpenter but it seems that everytime I hear any of her songs I find the need to just write more about her and about her songs. Call it Carpenter-mania or any other name, but I just think that the emotion put into Karen Carpenter's songs is enough to immortalize her. This week let me take a different approach to this quite interesting topic.
Lately, I was able to surf the net and gather/download quite a number of Karen's least popular songs. When I listened to all the songs I downloaded, I was stunned at how cleverly the lyrics were put together (I, being a writer and poet to begin with). Well, this week I decided to pick out situations that we usually find ourselves in and have a line from any Carpenter song seemingly tailored for these situations. I hope this would encourage the younger breed to listen and learn more from the songs of the divine anorexic diva, Karen Carpenter. Here goes:
- When terribly frustrated with love, Karen says - "It's a crazy old shame that all you get from love is a love song, and the best love song can leave you with a broken heart." (from 'All you get from Love is a Love Song')
- When we forget to show someone how much they really mean to us, Karen says-"I saved my pennies for a rainy day, but where can I buy another you?" (from 'Hideaway')
- When we are too preoccupied with our past, Karen says, - "Lose your defenses, unlock your mind, unwind and follow me; come let me help you see how to find a way to leave yesterday behind." (from 'Yesterday Behind').
- When we expect too much of people and things, Karen says, - "I know I've asked perfection of a quite imperfect world and fool enough to think that's what I'll find." (from 'I need to be in love")
- When we become too exhausted of our relationships, Karen says, - "But then is then, and now is now, and now is all that matters anyhow; make believe it's your first time, leave your sorrows behind. Make believe it's your first time and I'll make believe it's mine." (from 'Make Believe it's your first time')
- When we have become too materialistic that we tend to ask for so many things instead of the one thing that we actually need, Love, Karen says, - "Lord, we don't need another mountain, there are mountains and hillsides enough to climb; there are oceans and rivers enough to cross, 'till the end of time." (from 'What the World Needs Now')
- When we think we already know everything about our loved one and we get bored, Karen says, - "Let's take a lifetime to say I knew you well, for only time will tell us so, and love may grow for all we know." (from 'For all we know')
- When we don't seem to have someone to turn to during the blues, Karen says, - "Funny but it seems that it's the only thing to do, run and find the one who loves me." (from 'Rainy Days and Mondays')
- For old couples who think that they have come to the end of the line, Karen says, - "When the evenin' comes, we smile, so much of life ahead, we find a place where there's room to grow, and yes, we've just begun." (from 'We've only just begun')
- When we seem to have lost all confidence in ourselves, Karen says, - "Don't worry if it's not good enough for anyone else to hear, just sing, sing a song." (from 'Sing').
There you have it folks -- I do hope Karen has given us a bit of her crooning wisdom. As for me, there's something more left to do -- search for more of her songs and drool off to dreamland with her voice on my mp3 player! This is life!
